MEDITATION: Meditation classes and other activities at the Gomba will typically last anywhere from 3 to 7 days. RETREATS - NYUNG NE: WHAT ARE NYUNG NE? NYUNG Nes are very powerful purification practices introduced by the Indian Nun Gelongma Palma (Bhikshuni Srimati) who lived in the 8 th Century. Ancient texts refer to her as a hermit, a siddha and a yogi possessed with miraculous powers. She was dying of leprosy, her limbs had rotted away and she was in terrible agony. She began to meditate on 1000 armed Chenrezig, while fasting. Through her perseverance and faith, she regained all her limbs and attained perfect health. Her mind liberated, she went on to become a great lama. It is from her that the NYUNG NE practice comes – a practice of Chenrezig in the 1000 armed form. It is A MEDITATION ON DEEP COMPASSION without limit.
Nyung Ne lasts two full days. The practice may be repeated as often as one wishes . It begins the morning before sunrise and ends two days later. One meal is allowed before noon on the first day. Complete fasting with no drinking is observed on day two. Absolute silence on that day. Fasting is broken at sunrise of the day that follows. NYUNG NE VOWS: Traditional Nyungne purification retreat consists of maintaining eight vows and repeating practices of purification for a set number of days.
The eight vows to be kept for the practice include:
These vows are applicable to a period of 24 hours and may be renewed. HISTORICAL NOTES: History relates that Gelongma Palmo actually practiced the original NYUNG NE ritual in Chobhar Village. Adinath Temple in Chobhar was later dedicated to her.
